Final Opening sequence: Hollow Earth

Hollow Earth
Welcome to my blog. After many weeks of endless effort, dedication and time I have finally finished my main task. The video below is the final version of my approximately two minute opening sequence. This sequence was set around a brief, saying that we must make a two minute opening sequence with titles and a genera of my choice. On this blog I have also tracked my progress from when I first started AS media studies. Overall from this blog and my final opening sequence I am happy and proud of what I have achieved over the past year and I hope you will enjoy reading my blog as much as I have writing it.

Thank you
Thomas Ewart

Evaluation Question 5

Quesion 5
How did you attract/ address your audience

Most big film companies use promotional propaganda when advertising there film. There are many different types of propaganda and advertisement this can range from TV adverts and trailers to posters. Some examples of posters can be:

These examples of billboard advertising show that there are many different ways of showing of your film be it just a plane advert like the "Bad grandpa" which states the name of the film, main actor and release date. Or you can be inventive like the "district 9" which has been clever with its advert as it designed to a similar world as the film is set in saying it is "Forbidden to pick up non-humans" and being very subtle with the name. this advert is more it intrigue you rather than tell you what it is.

Another way of advertising is like the "TED" advert which assumes you know what the film is either about of that you have herd of the film. This does not specify the date but informs you that it will be coming soon.

These examples of film Advertisements in the form of trailers which show short snippets of the film and try to make you interested in the film. The examples I have included is:

Transformers:Age of extinction, The lego movie and the amazing spider-man 2.
Trailers are becoming more and more popular as media technology continues to advance. As better affects and improvements to equipment become better.
Similarly to posters and billboard adverts a trailer is designed to intrigue you and make you more excited for the film. Trailers are one of the most useful types of advertising because it gives your audience a idea of what the film is going to be about and what type of film/genera it is going to be for example a trailer can make you express similar feelings to what the film will e.g. sadness, fear, excitement, suspense etc. However as for our task we only had to make a opening sequence so trying to make a trailer is very difficult as we do not have a full film, as most film trailers show footage from through out the film.

To attract our audience we created a movie poster. The poster is designed to intrigue the reader in to finding out more about this film. The poster clearly states the title of the film and the date of release. The date has been placed top central to attract the readers look towards it and the title has been placed along side the image to also draw your attention to aid in this the title is in a different font and is much bigger than the rest of the information. The smaller writhing at the top includes:
Lead actor,
Director,
Editor,
Cinematography,
Sound,
Production Company.

The atmosphere of the poster also links in with the post apocalyptic setting so give that idea to the reader.

BFI Field Frip

BFI Field Trip
On Wednesday 5th February 2014 we went to the BFI ( British Film Institute) on the London Southbank. We arrived at about 10:30am just in time for the first part of the lecture on how teenagers are protrade in films. The lecture showed how teenagers are shown/protrade in different films.
Some of the examples they explained where:

  • Kidulthood
  •  Quadrophenia
  • My brother the devil

Lecture on youth media
The lecture was presented by Matthew Hall and focused how film and media present youth culture and lifestyle and how this has changed over the years. He first spoke about how the change from child to teenager came about and how this new generation on rebellious teens wanted to break away from normal, everyday life. He then went on to say about how this new way of young life has been shown in the media and in film to which he showed us a clip from the film "Quadrophenia" Based in the 1960 which portrays teenagers as a violent and angry as the clip shows a group of teens running amok and terrorizing the local beach. This film mainly shows teen as uncaring, rebellious in the society.

My brother the devil
After lunch we watched the full film of "My brother the devil" which is a low budget film produced by sally El Hosaini which focuses on a small family living in a lower class area of hackney. It follows the life of two brothers, The eldest brother which is in a local gang and his younger brother who is trying to get into this gang but is being prevented access by his older brother. This film does a really good job of showing teens in a difficult situations such as bullying, sexuality, Drugs, alcohol and gangs. After the film we got to have a interview with one of the producers, Julia Godzinskaya , where we could ask questions about there ,choices while making the film, why they did question certain aspects of sexuality, and gang life.

AS Media Questions

AS Media Questions

Once we have finished our main task we then have to focus on the Media Evaluation Questions, these questions are
  1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products.
  2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
  3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
  4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
  5. How did you attract/address your audience?
  6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
  7. Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?
We have been advised to use a different type of media for each question for example (Documentary, News report, Directors cut ect)

1.For the first question I am deciding on weather to do a Directors cut and explain what is going on and why we decided to do it to which I will reference the question and explain how our media product develops, uses and challenges conventional media products.

2. For the second question I am deciding to do a vox pop similar to question 4 but ask them how did they feel about the way represented the main character. by doing this is can get a detailed view from the viewers view of the character.

3.For the third question I am deciding to do explanation on what types of media institutions there are and what types of genera's they distribute and then go on to explain what one would suit my opening sequence best.

4.For the forth question I am deciding to do a vox pop which will allow me to analyse what different generations thought of our opening sequence, by doing this I can get a detailed evaluation of which age group prefers this genera of film.

5.For the fifth question i have decided to do a document with different examples of attracting people to your film for example posters, advert etc . Our group created a poster to represent the themes of our opening sequence and the setting with this I will be able to explain how we attracted/addressed our audience and how other media institution attract their audience.

6.For the sixth question I shall write a information booklet/presentaion on how to use/how we used certain technologies that we used during the process of making this product. I shall also provide clips and photos this will make it easier to explain when I have a image of clip that I can talk over or write next to

7.For the seventh question i am going to do a pod cast with the othre members of my group and i will explain what aspects of my perliminary taks halped me in this final production, i will also explian what aspects i have advanced in since the perliminary task for example i have improved in camera place ments and types of shots which allowed me to be more inventive with the placement of the camera and the type of shot that i took.

Ending to the opening sequence

The Ending
We have decided to change our ending to allow of a more open ending which will allow the audience to question more about what is going to happen next. Our original ending was that the character was going to get shot by a mysterious character but we decided that the ending would be to abrupt and not leave the audience questioning what is going to happen next. So after thinking about what else we could do we decided that we are not going kill the character instead we are going to leave the ending more open to opinion and to try and keep the watcher wanting more.To further Reduce our over all time we also had to cut out another scene to make our opening sequence fit the time scale of the brief. The scene we had to cut was the scene when our character wakes up in the building, the reason we cut this is because it dint totally fit the story line and the scene made the whole opening to long.

Media pitch

Media pitch
This is the power point we used to explain our groups idea and what we would like our opening sequence to b like. The power point only explains what we would like our opening sequence be like but getting hold of and using celebrity actors would be very difficult.

Diegetic and Non-Diegetic

Diegetic sound

Diegetic sound is the sound that is visible for example;
  • Dialogue
  • Sound made by objects
  •   Sound made by props
Diegetic sound can also been known as "actual sound". Diegetic sound also is identifiable by that yu can either see the sound being made or that that you can identify that the sound originated from the scene or previous scene

Non-Degetic sound

Non-Diegetic sound is where you cant see/infer where sound is coming from for example;
  • Sound track
  • Commentary
  • SFX
Non-Diegetic sound is often used to add effect to a scene for example set a mood with a backing track.
Non-Diegetic sound can also be known as Commentary sound.

Both of these types of sound can be used to create ambiguity or surprise.

Video diary #3

Video diary #3

This our third video diary on our second day of filming

Firearms laws when filming

Firearms laws and use of replica weapons

To allow our group to use a replica weapon we must first go through many procedures to be able to use the prop.

The UK gun law on airsoft weapons states that any airsoft replica weapon must have a "two tone" colour scheem (51% of the weapon must be painted in a unrealistic colour). The problem with this law is for us to be able to film a realistic scene with a airsoft replica weapon is that the gun must look the part so cant have a "two tone" colour scheem. The problem that we face is that this is against the law.

Two tone rifle(similar to what we will be using)

Two tone pistol

To try and overcome this problem we have to contact the "DOH" (firearms department) to let them know when and where we will be filming. after that we will have to contact Thames valley police control to get a URN (unique reference number) which will allow us to film. We have to go through these procedures in case a bystander notices us and calls 999 even though we have a URN the police will still have to turn up.

Props
I was set the task to source props and equipment. The props I was set to look for was a gun(pistol, rifle like gun) and a mele weapon (like a golf club, baseball bat, spade etc).

I found a AR15 assault rifle air soft repicla from a friend who will let us borrow it for the filming but to be able to use the weapon in a public place we have to get permission from the police to be able to use the weapon. (Picture below)

We have decied to use a mele wepon like a golf club are a baseball bat or a spade(picture below)
