On Wednesday 5th February 2014 we went to the BFI ( British Film Institute) on the London Southbank. We arrived at about 10:30am just in time for the first part of the lecture on how teenagers are protrade in films. The lecture showed how teenagers are shown/protrade in different films.
Some of the examples they explained where:

  • Kidulthood
  •  Quadrophenia
  • My brother the devil

Lecture on youth media
The lecture was presented by Matthew Hall and focused how film and media present youth culture and lifestyle and how this has changed over the years. He first spoke about how the change from child to teenager came about and how this new generation on rebellious teens wanted to break away from normal, everyday life. He then went on to say about how this new way of young life has been shown in the media and in film to which he showed us a clip from the film "Quadrophenia" Based in the 1960 which portrays teenagers as a violent and angry as the clip shows a group of teens running amok and terrorizing the local beach. This film mainly shows teen as uncaring, rebellious in the society.

My brother the devil
After lunch we watched the full film of "My brother the devil" which is a low budget film produced by sally El Hosaini which focuses on a small family living in a lower class area of hackney. It follows the life of two brothers, The eldest brother which is in a local gang and his younger brother who is trying to get into this gang but is being prevented access by his older brother. This film does a really good job of showing teens in a difficult situations such as bullying, sexuality, Drugs, alcohol and gangs. After the film we got to have a interview with one of the producers, Julia Godzinskaya , where we could ask questions about there ,choices while making the film, why they did question certain aspects of sexuality, and gang life.
